Small Business Saturday....

November 30, 2013
The stores in my town were still pretty crazy today with shoppers walking from one to another looking for whatever they think they need to put the HO Ho in their holiday. The headline in todays paper read "Bleak Friday"  and it made me actually laugh out loud.  What do you expect?  There are people without jobs, people working minimum wage jobs...taxes going through the roof in my community...add in this health care nonsense now and your surprised that these stores aren't making mega millions?  I'm shocked.  haha

I didn't have anything in particular I was shopping for even though the stores did fill my email box up with sale information overnight.

I did stop by Hallmark and grabbed a few gifts for others as well as my yearly purchase...the stuffed reindeer to add to my collection.  Assorted sizes and styles, the back of my loveseat near the second tree is where they sit waiting to get their picture taken every year.  And every year when its time for photos, everyone seems to end up there...grabbing one or two while acting silly.
Hallmark also sent me my coupon for my free snowman ornament for the July premier and October release purchases so I wanted to grab him as well to also add to that collection.

From there I people watched as I made my way to B&BW.  I could see this store was crowded a bit and filled with new SA's standing guard at the entrance with the VIP tote in hand.  The manager was standing there for a few moments ....I could hear her as I approached... and then she headed to the back room.  Which was fine by me.  Some people are leaders and some need to hang it up and take a vacation.  When the vibe of a store changes so much it is time to look into the reasons behind it.  And the vibe here has changed.  Maybe someone will sage the place and get it back to its happy place.  Anyway...

Apparently, today you could get that VIP bag for the $20.00 price with ANY purchase.  Sort of a slap in the face on B&BW's part I think.  Yesterday I needed a $40.00 purchase and today, because they didn't go over too big or someone ordered way too many...they will let you get one with a fifty cent pocketbac purchase. I did hear a few of the SA's giving people at the registers a hard time at first about the dollar amount, and then an employee whose been there forever came and told each of the girls the correct info.

I was there at noon and saw no signage for the 3/$6 travel items.  So I asked one of the new girls who was busy talking with her coworkers if they were in fact on sale and she told me she needed to go ask the manager in the back.  A few moments later she came out and told me she would need to see my email and get the code in order for me to get the sale price. Perhaps this manager should make sure her new staff was informed of all of the sales of the day.

The store did have the $5.00 Velvet Sugar Fine Fragrance Mist out and I made my way over to the tester to give it a try.  I find its super sweet.  And like what happens with me often, all of the scents seem to start smelling alike.  Almost as if there is this base scent they use and change out some notes....This was sweet and nothing more than ordinary.  Not that anyone else shouldn't go and try it...as I've said before...all of our chemistries are different and scents are a personal thing that we each need to experience for ourselves.  I do think the packaging is cute, and it reminds me of a Valentines Day theme with its Victorian like netting and hearts...and should I want to try the other items when they finally release I can get them for free with a coupon.  I passed on getting it at this store.

With good reason.
 I'm a kitten.
I am a devoted shopper to this brand with the big ole box of receipts to show for it.  When information comes out from the company itself that a product is going to release, it is not uncommon that a customer will come to the store and ask to smell it...and see if it's out.  When another store tells you after your purchase to make sure you stop by Friday that Velvet Sugar is coming...I sort of take it to heart that it may very well be coming out.  So when I go to the store to see it... I don't expect a manager to scream....scream at me in frustration in front of other shoppers... that her store heard nothing of the kind...so she says...and she doesn't even have the product....and she's going to call the store that told me that and give them hell.  So with her checking someone out, I called the store myself and asked and I was told that it was to come out but was pushed back.  No big deal.  Well, this manager heard me talking and started being upset again asking how is this info getting out and they aren't telling the truth...blah blah...closing off the distance between us.

Again...I am a kitten.  I am a grown woman who does not need anyone venting their frustrations out on me... I have my own.  So when she went to talk with someone who was beginning to work there I left rather that lose my temper.  My husband was shocked I was in the store for under five minutes and asked what happened.  When I told him he simply said...stop shopping there.

I go to the other store the next day....and lo an behold...she DID call....and tried to cause an issue all because I asked if a scent was released? And everyone who works there and knows me told me about the call.
Perhaps there is jealously between the stores, I don't know and frankly I don't care.  Learn your job and you won't be sidelined when the customer asks a simple question you should know the answer to. And don't forget...the customer is always right!  Don't scream at them in any voice higher than a whisper.  And don't scream at me...Because when I have had it....I'm no longer a kitten.
Meow.  Haha.

After lunch I stopped at Michaels where tonight all things Christmas noted in their email went 70 % off...balls and more...Not like I need more balls, I do have plenty....but still wow... great prices.

They also have the Fall Thanksgiving items 70% off and I found some cute Wilton candy making molds...craft foam kits ...and cupcake papers in a few sizes. Check out the racks and be sure to look at everything all the way in the back of the shelf.  Why they put everything from one holiday on one small rolling rack is beyond me. But those goodies could not hide from a shopper....with a mission.

The only small business I patronized today was the Chinese place we eat at.  I hope to do better next time I am out shopping...

Spring 2014 ~ test candles ~ some reviews~ SPRING STREET SWEET SHOP line ~ Destination Line

November 30, 2013
My order for some of the Spring 2014 candles came today....which shocked me...
A Saturday Delivery??
Wonderful!
I know we aren't done with Christmas/Holiday B&BW yet and we have barely had any snow to remind us of the season we are in...but these scents coming out now makes it fun to get an idea of what is coming in the next few months!
And coming from customer service the candles were not wrapped in the paper but instead stuck in a crate and surrounded with a lot of paper.  They arrived in good condition so no complaints.

The only thing I would mention is the temperatures here are bitter cold and the wax itself was sliding up and down in the glass jar and the marshmallow candle got the worst of it.  Still very usable of course, just messy looking.  If you don't have anyone that can go to a store offering these and get them for you and mailed to you... I would definitely go through CS.  I know I will be ordering again from customer service.

Review:
1) candles as we know are currently coming in priced at $22.50
how that will affect sale prices remains to be seen.
2) SPRING STREET SWEET SHOP LINE  candles have galvanized lids with an embellished Bath and Body Works Home logo and trademark sun.  There is also a gingham sticker with brown scalloped edges and the line name.
3) Destination line candle lids are those raised art deco style lids again... Beautiful.

Strawberry Sorbet
A coral pink colored wax, this wax on cold sniff is pretty light....and, hmm, the strawberry is, I 'm not sure.  There is a note to me right from the beginning that has a sharpness to it almost changing the strawberry smell...and that makes me curious to know what this is going to smell like warmed.  I will burn this tomorrow.  The label is again a pink gingham border with art deco trim around a picture of a bowl of scooped sorbet with a strawberry on top.  Again, if my eyes were closed and I smelled this without knowing a name I am not sure I would say strawberry.

Lavender Marshmallow
A light purple colored wax, this is a softer scent on cold sniff that reminds me of a herbal note.  Not overpowering at all, when I first sniffed this one, it immediately reminded me of a Christmas scented candle (not pine and tree Christmas.)  but a lighter version and soon as I remember which I will make note.  Its a beautiful scent, but I am a huge fan of Lavender.  They are using the name marshmallow too, but I am not sure if I would say marshmallow...or is it more of a vanilla lightness I get from it. I am hoping for a strong throw for this one as it is going to be one I will buy again barring any big twists.  Definitely cute enough for an Easter/Spring gift too.  Label has a lavender purple gingham border with the art deco border around numerous soft colored marshmallows.

Pink Bubble Gum
A pink colored wax, this scent for me is sugary sweet to the max on cold sniff, and definitely what you could imagine a big wad of pink watermelon bubblegum to smell like.  it does smell like a vanilla-drowned watermelon version and I will burn this tomorrow to see what its throw and warm scent is like.  I love this colored wax as it reminds me Valentines Day is coming and this would be a cute gift.  The label has a pink and white gingham border and an art deco border around the glass apothecary jar filled with pink balls.

Fleur de Provence--"lavender verbena bouquet"

A creamy white colored wax, this scent on cold sniff made me run for the matches to get it warmed and I was not disappointed for both sniffs.  I love lavender and this candle smelled spot on to that scent to me.  Its herbal throw is just what I smell when I pinch the lavender heads of the flowers I grow.  The first hour burning, the wax pooled perfectly and the wicks burned well.  I never cut my wicks...not in the beginning nor during mid burn and so far so good with this candle. This label is a picture of a French lavender field  surrounded with a white border and a postage cancellation stamp  reminding you it is from the new Destination line.  I will be ordering more of this scent.

Black Friday 2013 Shopping ~ Bargains by the bags full

November 29th, 2013  Black Friday
I stayed up pretty late last night checking out various websites that were offering Black Friday Sales for those of us happy to sit in pajamas and shop.   I was not going to be one of those people running around from store to store trying to snag things I don't need and deal with people who are only too happy to hit me with their cart.

Oh there have been years that I have participated in the sales...up early stopping for coffee then heading out to parking lots waiting for the doors to open to grab up the toy sales to help Santa out.  A few times I have watched the sun come up with my brother as we hit all of the stores finishing out the Christmas shopping in one day.

Today we didn't get out and going until late morning and we chose to go to one of my favorite malls that is usually very quiet.  But today it would not be ....  and there were a lot of people milling around the few stores the mall still has open and each of the shoppers had at least four bags in their hands....and at least one of those bags was Bath and Body Works.

I made my way into the store through a crush of women and the new sales associate greeted me with a question....asking me if I needed her to explain what today was all about.  The stores manager was rushing behind her and upon hearing her say that, she glanced up to see me and laughed....as I smiled and responded to the SA that it wouldn't be necessary.  She was eager and that was fine; both that time and the two other times she checked on me.  I hadn't planned to buy anything today as my purchases were pretty much done but of course you always find that one thing...or ten, that you think you should get.  And I did.

I didn't get candles this trip...I do have some Spring 2014 candles coming so I held off going too crazy.  Unbeknownst to me at the time of my ordering, I was told today that I could have someone ( my aunt who lives where they are testing currently) go into the store, pick out all I want and then the store could ship them out to me so she didn't need to worry about it.  I of course would pay that $6.00 Fed Ex charge.  I guess the look on my face was one of befuddled BS in hearing this now and not believing it to be true...I remarked...that it kind of end runs around the "we can't do phone orders" nonsense that is currently their mantra. It explains a lot of things....but I don't know that I buy it. I may just have her go to her mall and see what they say on that end.
The bad thing about having to go through customer service was not being able to use a survey or coupon to save on that third candle. The more I save...the more I BUY.  The good thing is that I told them what I wanted and it seemed pretty easy.  Let's see how they arrive and smell.

I was able to stack coupons at the register a bit today, but nothing too crazy like some are saying their stores did. (My receipt reads I saved $144.80). What I would love to see happen regarding BF shopping with coupon stacking is the registers have it programmed inside to have the SA ask if you have " this many" of a certain kind of coupon taking the guess work out of the equation.

I did have a 20% off coupon from a CS call from some time ago so I used that, two free item coupons and a 10 off of 30 coupon.

I saw the store still had a box of VIP BAGS left and the women that were peeking inside weren't quite sure what it was about.  And although I said I wasn't going to get it, my purchases did come out to be enough to get that as well for a price of $13.11. I came home and cut that ugly bow off of the bag first thing.

I bought the last VBN room spray and two cinnamon frosting and one twisted peppermint for the price of $3.60 each.  I got my little zebra purse scetnportable for $3.28
Some Mahogany Teakwood dual packs of WF for a gift $3.28 and a HFO in the same scent for $3.93

The new Eau De Parfum purse size of the new Forever Red Vanilla Rum were at the registers and I tossed one into my sale for $3.93

This oil burner and candle holder were my free items and both were priced at $8.50 and $9.50

And these little snowman cups (2) were purchased at a BonTon store for 60 % off..($6.00) ..and are much cuter in person.
I am still not sure if they are going to be filled for gifts or filled with cocoa for me.  ;)
So I did my share of contributing to Black Friday retail wise... Tomorrow is Small Business Saturday so I will see what I can do to help those folks out too...  ;)  and then cyber Monday pretty much happened Cyber Thanksgiving.  I hope where ever you ended up this morning it was memorable...and fun and I hope that you too had bargains by the bags full!!!

Thanksgiving Day and shopping in my Santa Claus jammies

November 28., 2013
I was up late again last night so this morning I slept in a bit....7am to be exact.  I could hear the rustling of pots and pans coming from my kitchen and the beginning scent of something in the oven.  My husband has been the chief cook of the holiday ham and turkey from day one of our marriage and with there never being a ruined meal, why mess with perfection. I am his assistant and in charge of everything else including clean up and that works for me. I got myself up and going and tossed in a few loads of laundry before heading out to shovel last nights blustery snow.  It wasn't a lot of snow, just enough to slicken up the walkways and driveway so it needed to be cleared while the sun was out warming this cold Thanksgiving day.

We were not having guests for dinner so whenever we got to eating...we ate.

I spoke with my sister in town while folding the first load of laundry as she made her meal and not long after my brother called.  I thought he was home preparing his meal for the day but came to find out he was on his way to grab a quick bite to eat out as his girl was at work early today and needed to return again later this afternoon so with his schedule of work beginning in the afternoon and working late, there wasn't time to cook. Such is retail. I asked that he join us and he declined as he was already at the parking lot of Chinese.

A few minutes after we hung up the phone rang back again and he asked if the offer was still good, they would love to join us.  The timing was perfect; we were just taking food from the oven and stove top and it wouldn't have worked out better if we planned it out this way.

I was truly shocked that we were having company....we haven't had big family holiday meals together for some time now... mostly since loosing Angel.  But that doesn't stop us from making enough food to feed more than just us.  My mom was the same way... no matter how little we had, she found a way to have this table full of all kinds of foods and should anyone not have a place to be... they were welcome at her table. It was something I learned from her, and something I taught Angeline.  And there were a few Thanksgivings she brought someone home from school who had no where to be...and we had sleep overs.

My husband and I were talking about my mom this morning while I was sipping my tea having breakfast.  I guess with it being Thanksgiving and the Macy's parade was on currently on tv, those memories of childhood past were triggered with the scent of food and feelings of missing her that she came up.  By the time she was 26 she had already had 4 children....and at the age of 30, she was divorced and alone with them.  While I didn't always agree with her ways of parenting at the time... maturity helped me understand now how difficult it must have been for her.

The food was delicious today and the company warmed my heart....more than I can put into words.  I was still talking about it with my brother now at 11pm as he drove home from work....(before returning again for 6am),

Almost as if the cosmos knew my heart pieces were hurting, they found a way to soothe me...and for that I will be eternally grateful.

After taking food to my father in law and checking on him, we both called other family and just relaxed the rest of the day watching football and checking out the sales online.

My email was filling up fast with all of these companies sending me 8pm sale updates for instore and online shopping.  And right here in my santa flannel pajamas is right where I want to be....Shopping.

Baby it's cold outside and I am in no mood to brave that nor the crazy drivers/shoppers.  No thank you.... You can have that 32" TV at Walmart for $98.   I am here sipping tea again with my feet propped up shopping on Ulta getting a bunch of things for me....and some things including the shipping was for free!

Victorias Secret with it's free totes....and JCPennys...Macy's and so many more.....all here for me at the touch of my mouse should I wish to buy, buy, buy.

This time next month the holidays will be over and the returns and Clearance sales will have begun.  How fast time flies....(glancing at the clock)
Speaking of time....I best get back to checking out a few more sites before heading to bed...

Thanksgiving is now done...Black Friday has begun.....

Italian themed gift basket idea and shopping at Michaels Craft store

November 26, 2013
I went shopping a bit this weekend looking for jeans for myself and after that discouraging trip through "who actually designs these things" ville....I went to my favorite store to relax....my spa of sorts... Michaels Crafts store.
With it being days before holiday time officially begins, these stores really want your money and they are pulling out the stops with the sales to get you in~!  And nothing makes me feel better than crafts.  Yes, there, I said it.  Crafts soothe me more than soap.

Directly in front of the store  outside are metal displays holding tons of assorted themed baskets....everything from Santa pants and stockings to general year round plaid lined and cute for the younger ones glitter sprayed.  All half off.  I seriously thought about loading up a cart full as the prices were very reasonable.
I am a basket fiend.
I am not sure what it is...I think a basket reminds me of home, and Home is something I fight for and cherish and I love sharing that thought.

But I have a bunch of brand new baskets from last years clearance up my attic waiting to be filled with all of the goodies I collected so far that I need to use first. So I passed.  For now ;)

In seeing all of this new B&BW Winter Fresh Picked Market candles and luxe olive oil bottled soap now online, I would so love to do a Italian dinner themed basket as a gift with those inside and fill it up with home made pastas and glass bottled sauces, herbs, cheeses and olives,  long hard bread, and biscotti cookies and a bottle of great wine, all of the things for a meal.  Add in a dvd romantic movie or Andrea Bocelli cd for a finishing touch.

Hmm, that all sounds great right about now...as it's snowing like mad and I am getting hungry.
Okay, back to what I got.  I bought that cute little deer on sale for under $12 I think, the Charlie Brown burlap tree for $13, (I plan on adding a ball to it)  A few wintery branches 50% off and a door swag for $19.99 on a half off sale.  I make all of my own wreaths and such but pricing out the flowers and greens was triple this....and with my new glass storm door~ the wreath I usually use gets too squished so this swag works perfectly here. ( I did add a long piece of white felt to the back of the swag to prevent the door which is also new, from getting scratched up).

So if your in need of a "spa day", check out your local Michaels to see what will inspire you...and save a few of those baskets for me. ;)
